Back and Neck Pain Care

Preventing Back Pain

Good posture, proper lifting techniques, regular exercise and a healthy lifestyle can help prevent back pain and problems.

Posture Good posture can help prevent spinal discs from degenerating. When you slouch, you're putting added pressure on these discs which can cause them to wear out faster. Our spine specialists recommend getting in the habit of sitting up straight and using seats with good back support. Good posture is also important when standing and sleeping.

Staying fit also can help protect your back. Strengthening your abdominal and back muscles takes some of the pressure off your discs and keeps them healthy. Maintaining a healthy weight also takes pressure off your discs and prevents certain back conditions like spinal stenosis.

Here are more ways to prevent back pain:

  • Practice correct lifting techniques
  • avoid smoking
  • reduce emotional stress, which may cause muscle tension
